Watches have always been very important instruments in aviation. Oris made its first pilot’s watch in 1938. The watch had an oversized crown, large Arabic numerals and a central pointer hand indicating the date. Today, we call this the Big Crown Pointer Date and it is our signature design. The same characteristics typify our aviation watches: large, luminous indexes on dark backgrounds for easy readability, oversized crowns for easy operation, even while gloved, expandable leather straps so the pilot can wear the watch over an aviation suit, and in some cases, such as the ProPilot Altimeter, functions tailored to the world of aviation.
